Universally accessible “Fort Point Trail” in yellow. Robinson Trail in blue.
The best part of this town trail is the small, beautiful peninsula at its end, the setting for Fort St. Georges (1808-1809). While today the structure looks more like a raised berm, the one-time fort sits on a wide-open, grassy point with views up and down the river. There are picnic tables and an informational panel. You can read about the state historic site here.
To get to this amazing place, you will meander along the 0.5-mile, universally-accessible Fort Point Trail. The parking area for the trail is shared with those who are filling up jugs with cold water from an underground spring. The path, about 1.1 miles round trip, is graded gravel with some boardwalks.
On the other side of Route 131 is the 1.75-mile Robinson Trail, which takes you along a wooded, flat trail to a little lollipop loop in the woods. You’ll cross a stream along the way. While this trail is not accessible, it is easy, aside from some uneven terrain.
Note: As of late 2022, the former Jones Brook Trail, which once linked the St. Georges Town Forest and the fort, between Kinney Woods Road and Route 131, has been closed.
Directions: (From the town): From the intersection of Route 1 and 131 in Thomaston, travel approximately five miles south on Route 131 and turn right onto Wiley’s Corner road followed by an immediate right onto a gravel access road and parking area. From Watts Avenue in Tenants Harbor, travel north on Route 131 approximately 4.7 miles to Wiley’s corner.
