This is a no-thrills, but very pleasant, walk in the woods! There are two short loops marked with faded blue blazes — the first is under a mile, the second is about 0.6 mile. The trail also continues a bit farther west after the second loop, but I found it hard to find the path, and the land trust describes the way as “unmaintained.” The mature forest community is protected by the Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, which says the lowland stream in the preserve has a long history of beaver activity.
Directions: From US Route 1 in Newcastle, head south on River Road for 1.5 miles As you head south on River Road, you will see a small cemetery and then Kiln Road on your left. The preserve is on your right soon after with a small pull-off for two to three cars.
