Beaver Pond, Westport Island

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 45 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.25 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: east
  • Sights: Beaver Pond

A short but exceedingly lovely little trail here transports you to a ledge by the side of a small, freshwater pond, the perfect place for a swim. Or you can just sit on the warm ledge in the sun. I believe there’s just one house on the pond.

Kennebec Estuary Land Trust says the nine-acre pond was “originally created as a commercial ice pond in the 1880s … and hosts a leatherleaf boggy fen along its shoreline.”

The trail starts out on a wide woods road. In about 500 feet, it branches off to the left onto a footpath that is flat, well-marked, and easy.

Directions: From Route 1, take Route 144 9.5 miles down Westport Island. Turn left onto the second entrance for East Shore Road and go 0.34 miles to the kiosk and trail on the left. Park in the shoulder.
