We explored two protected Downeast Salmon Federation parcels on either side of Route 9 along Beaverdam Stream. Each has a large Downeast Salmon Federation sign, visible from Route 9.
One of the two, on the southern side (or eastern side of Route 9!), consisted of a 1.4-mile blazed loop (0.2 mile leg to a 0.9-mile loop). While you can see the stream at times, the Federation asks visitors to not disturb it, which it calls some of the last best Atlantic Salmon habitat. The trail both begins and ends in a small field where we saw an Indigo bunting, rare for this area, and a hummingbird.
The path winds through forest and is pleasant and easy. On the other side of the road, a short ways up the gravel road, you’ll arrive at the trailhead kiosk and small parking area. A trail sign indicated the trail was straight ahead, but it quickly petered out. Up the road about 0.5 miles, you’ll come to an open meadow. There is a gravel road that swings down toward the stream, and you can check out one of the large pools.
The preserve seems like a work in progress! We’ll be back.
