This is a really popular mountain, and just an hour from Portland. It’s not very strenuous (although it’s also not a breeze) and it has beautiful views from an open peak. To get away from the crowds, head over to Stone Mountain, where the views are not quite as nice as Burnt Meadow’s but still good.
Prepare for some steep sections and rock scrambles as you ascend up Burnt Meadow Mountain’s North Peak on the blue-blazed trail, a distance of approximately 1.2 miles. You’ll have a bit more of a gradual hike on the yellow-blazed Twin Brooks Trail, which will bring you to Burnt Meadow’s summit in roughly 2.2 miles.
The total loop, without adding Stone Mountain, adds up to 3.4 miles, according to my GPS. (Other sources clock it as a bit longer.) Including Stone Mountain in your adventure will add 1.4 miles (it’s about 0.7 to the summit of Stone from the junction with Twin Brooks Trail).
Directions: From Route 113, take a left (if you’re coming from the south) onto Rt. 160 south. Route 160 takes a sharp left — don’t miss it! Go past the public boat launch on Burnt Meadow Pond (where you can swim after your hike), and the trailhead parking is a few hundred yards on your right.
