Central Penjajawoc Preserve, Bangor

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 182 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.8 miles in network
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: tamarack trees, wildflowers, ferns, mosses, lichens, a field of milkweed, Penjajawoc Marsh

When I walked this preserve in late November, after a light snow, the trails were really quite wet. (That photo of grayness below is a reflection of my mood after getting my boots very soggy.) The trail, though, is blissfully simple—you have a choice to do a shorter 1.5-mile loop, mainly in the woods, or do a longer, nearly 2-mile loop that takes you to a view of the marsh and across a couple of fields. It’s nice to be on a preserve designated for walkers, with their simpler needs, after trying to figure out a labyrinthine trail system taken over by mountain and fat bikers. And that’s because bicycles, and dogs, are not allowed on this Bangor preserve. There’s a great map here of Bangor area trails which designates which trails systems are pedestrian only.

Directions: From The Central Penjajawoc Preserve parking area is off of Essex Street, about 1.2 miles on the right after you pass Grandview Avenue.
