Map shows trails in Hancock County

  • Scott’s Landing — There is good birding at this 24-acre meadow-y preserve.
  • Shore Acres Preserve — Several trails meander through this 67-acre coastal preserve—the highlight being the perimeter and meadow trails.
  • Pine Hill — A .1-mile road and quick scramble take you to the top of a peridotite cliff, with views over treetops.
  • Barred Island Preserve — A 1-mile trail through a mossy forest brings you to a big, beautiful beach (at low tide, at least!).
  • Edgar M. Tennis Preserve — You can take a number of interesting short walks, or one long walk, at this diverse preserve with a sweet, red-sand pocket beach.
  • Lisa Tolman Wotton Preserve — This 42-acre preserve has a large cedar forest, a rocky outcrop and a small meadow.
  • Mariners Memorial Park — A half-mile path skirts the perimeter of this small, open park with views over the cove.
  • Lily Pond Park — A swimming spot, with short, easy, wheel-friendly paths around the beach. Unofficial paths (for now, at least) head off around the pond.
  • Crockett Cove Woods — A roughly one-mile trail takes you through a mossy 98-acre forest.
  • Settlement Quarry — If you have time to only do one walk here, do this one. It is an extraordinary (and short) walk to an abandoned granite quarry with expansive views.
  • Holt Mill Pond Preserve — This trail system was difficult to access and somewhat neglected when we visited in the summer of 2021. however, the trails are well-blazed, and take you to several spots along Holt Mill Pond.
  • Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School — The 0.3-mile boardwalk through this swampy forest is well made and delightful, with creative flourishes added by the children.
