Devil’s Head Conservation Area, Calais

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 315 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 2.7 mile loop
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Sights: St. Croix River, rocky beach with sand patches

On my map, the driveable access road is in pink; the walking trails are in blue.

There are two trail loops at Devil’s Head: one is called Shoreline Bluffs, and the other is the Devil’s Head Trail. The Devil’s Head trail takes you to the top of the 340-foot headland with two lookouts. You can combine the loops for a 2.7-mile walk.

The Shoreline Bluffs trail is a bit easier than the Devil’s Head Trail, although the climb to the views from the Devil’s Head bluff is quite gentle because the trail has been well built and graded.

You can find the trailhead to Shoreline Bluffs from the parking area close to the beach on your left if you are facing the shore. Just follow the access road around the small loop it makes near the beach, and you will see the trail sign and a path heading into the woods.

On your right, if you’re facing the shore, you will find the trailhead to Devil’s Head. The trail sign is a bit small. I recommend starting with the Shoreline Bluffs Trail and continuing over the access road to complete the Devil’s Head loop.

Directions: The conservation area is located on Route 1, about 6 miles southeast of downtown Calais and 22 miles north of Eastport. You’ll pull into the access road and a parking area. You can park here and walk/bicycle down to the beach, or you can drive to the beach area and start your hike there.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
