Greenleaf Preserve, Phippsburg

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: 0.4 miles one way
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Sights: Kennebec River, salt marsh

A 0.4-mile public walking trail through this Phippsburg Land Trust easement leads to the Kennebec River and a small salt marsh along the bank. The remainder of the easement is private and not open to public access. The access road to the preserve, on Atwood Lane, follows a narrow, rather rough lane.

When you arrive at the trailhead kiosk at the base of the hill on Atwood Lane, park in the small area by the land trust sign. Walk up the driveway maybe 150 feet or so, you’ll see the land trust’s sign for “public trail to river” and the trail on your right. Head into the woods. The trail goes steeply down a hill to reach the flat area by the river. It then bends left to continue up the river a short distance. When the trail turns and starts heading uphill again, turn back and retrace your steps!

For some other short walks nearby, check out Noble Hill and Mary’s Woods.

Directions: Take Main Rd. (Rte. 209) 3.3 Miles north of Center Store, or 1.5 miles south of Winnegance, and turn onto Fiddlers Reach Road. Proceed 0.3 miles to Atwood Lane, and turn right onto Atwood. At the bottom of a big hill, you will find the preserve’s parking area on an old abandoned road. Continue up the driveway on foot for 150 feet or so to find the trail on your right.
