Hart Farm trails in green. Fields Pond trails in blue.

The view at the very start of this Holden Land Trust preserve and working farm, even from the parking lot, is beautiful. Over the farm’s sloping fields down Copeland Hill, you can see for many miles. The Portland Press Herald describes the view “over the broad valley of the Penobscot River and far beyond, to the mountains along the Appalachian Trail corridor, from Barren to White Cap to Katahdin.”

The trails around the fields, which harbor bobolinks, include some long hills — good for cardio! The Hart Farm trail system is connected to Fields Pond Audubon Center, giving you the option to go for a long walk through different habitats. (But the Audubon Center does not allow dogs.) If you do head over to Fields Pond, the trails will bring you by a deep ravine.

The land trust offers more information about the preserve’s trails, including a difficulty rating for each one.

Directions: The address of the farm is 430 Copeland Hill Rd in Holden. The parking area and trailhead kiosk are across the street from the farmhouse, where the road makes a big bend.
