Hermit Point Trail, AMC Maine Woods Initiative

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 100,000 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.3 miles one way
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Long Pond

This trail to Hermit Point, a rocky peninsula that juts into Long Pond, is short but spectacular.

If you’re not staying at the nearby Gorman Chairback Lodge, you’ll have to park at the visitor parking lot, 500 feet or so from the lodge. The trailhead is close to the small beach and picnicking area near the dock. It’ll be on your left if you’re facing the pond.

The 0.3-mile trail is easy, but has rocks and roots. At the end, it emerges onto a rocky peninsula covered in lichens and shrubs. There’s a few wooden stairs to make the clamber down easier. Walk to the end, and it it’s warm, go for a swim!

Directions: The trail is close to Gorman Chairback Lodge, which is off Chairback Mountain Road. You turn onto Chairback Mountain Road from Katahdin Iron Works Road (KI Rd.). Park at the visitor parking area and walk down the driveway to the lodge. The trail will be on the left, marked with a sign, close to the dock area.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
