Highland Research Forest, Bridgton

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 400 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 3.1 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: Highland Lake, wetland, stream

Trails in orange are part of the Research Forest; trails in blue are the Highlands Ridge Trail, which are groomed for Nordic skiing. Fat bikes allowed, too.

The 400 acres here are part of the watershed for Sebago Lake, I believe, based on my reading of this map by the Lakes Environmental Association. LEA plans to use the area for sustainable harvesting and long-term research projects related to woods, wildlife, soil, and water.

The trail system includes old woods roads and narrower footpaths, and brings you to the edge of a wetland and down to the shores of Highland Lake. From the parking area to Highland Lake, it’s roughly .9 miles one way. There are trail signs and the paths are blazed.

The trail system also connects with the vast ski trails of Highlands Ridge.

Directions: The parking area is off Commons Drive, roughly .9 miles from the intersection with Upper Ridge Road.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
