Hilton-Winn and Kimball Farm North Preserves, York and Ogunquit

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 175 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~3.4 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Ogunquit River, fields, brook, little waterfall, wetlands

Referred to as the Ogunquit River Trail Network, this varied preserve has many lovely highlights; “a mosaic of landscapes,” describes the York Land Trust. Although the whole preserve is worth exploring, if you are tight on time I would start on the east side, setting off on the Boardwalk Trail, which briefly follows the winding Ogunquit River, to the Loop Trail. Don’t miss the spur to a pretty overlook of the river — it wasn’t marked when I was there. I’ve noted it on my map with a red pin. On the preserve’s Loop trail there are two brook crossings with a wire strung across to help you. The trails runs along a brook that eventually opens up to a delightful pond.

Include the River Trail if you have time. There are interesting erratic rocks on the western side of the preserve, off the Split Rock Trail. Not shown on the official preserve map were mown trails down to the farm, ending at a spot with picnic tables and benches. I’m not sure if this area is open to visitors, or if the tables are for the farm’s summer campers.

Directions: From the junction of Berwick Road and Route 1 in Ogunquit, follow Berwick Road north 3 miles to the Preserve entrance on the right, that is immediately after the river crossing.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
