Before you head out to Hogback Mountain, which is privately owned, make sure the trail is open! You can find that information here.

The approximately 2-mile hike to the view on Hogback Mountain is fairly gradual and easy, taking you through land that has been logged. The views at the clearing (I think it’s the actual 1,115-foot summit) are lovely for a small mountain. You can head back the way you came, or continue on to the Bog Brook and Whitten Hill preserves. This trail is part of the 47-mile Hills to Sea Trail.

Directions: From the intersection of Routes 3 and 220 in Liberty, follow Route 220 north for 6.5 miles to Walker Ridge Road on the right. You can park at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife maintenance building and walk north on Route 220 for 1000 feet, or drive a little farther along and park by the side of the dirt road. The trail for Hogback leaves the road on the left, while the Georges Highland Path to Frye Mountain is on the right.
