John B. Mountain, Brooksville

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 38 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~1.1 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Sights: open summit (250 feet), views

This is a wonderful small mountain, just 250 feet high, that can be climbed quickly and offers great views of Eggemoggin Reach. The ascent is fairly easy, with some steep sections. On a couple rocky parts of the trail that can get slick, the land trust has added helpful ropes. This is probably a gorgeous walk to do in the autumn. Actually, it’s probably wonderful all year long. Take care at the summit — the ecosystem is fragile and it is easy to wander off the trail.

The original loop is about 1 mile. The Blue Hill Heritage Trust has since added a new trail, Long Cove Path. The highlight is really the summit, but if you want to extend your walk, you can check out this narrow cove.

Directions: The trailhead is on the west side of Breezemere Road, 0.8 miles from Route 176. A larger parking lot is located 0.2 miles before the trailhead and should be used for overflow parking

*Julia took the picture of the tree, second to last in the slideshow. She asked me to include this caption for her picture: “The most beautiful tree calls to me. Honey, honey come to me.”

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
