Kanokolus Bog, Unity

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 189 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.6 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: raised bog, forested wetlands, woods, small field

The trail here when we visited was a little overgrown and unkempt, but while that can make for some difficulty walking at times, it’s nice to visit a place that doesn’t appear to attract too many human visitors. The land is protected by Sebasticook Regional Land Trust.

In .3 miles after leaving the trailhead, you’ll reach a short side trail blazed yellow to the bog that was quite wild. The footpath connects to a snowmobile trail. Turn right and follow it about .15 mile to the bog’s edge.

The main trail continues another .5 miles through woods and a small meadow. It concludes with a .5-mile loop near Bacon Brook and the bog. It’s hard to see the bog through the trees unless you go off path.

Directions: The trailhead and small parking area is off Route 202, about 3.5 miles from downtown Unity on the left (east).
