Kate Furbish Elementary School trail, Brunswick

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: 0.5 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Woods, playground

The small woods tucked between the school, train tracks, neighborhood, and Route 1 is a great resource for the elementary school. It is clear they take use of it! If you walk the two short loops behind the school, you’ll pass some large stick “houses” and small knickknack shelves for forest treasures. It is also a nice resource for the neighborhood.

Like most trails near schools, it’s best if you visit during non-school hours, especially if you’re going to park in the school lot. The trails are located behind the playground, accessible via a gate. They’re mostly blazed — blue for the large loop, white for the small one — and when they’re not, they’re tagged with ribbons. Someone has created bog bridges through wet areas. They’re easy but rooty.

There is a gate lining the highway, protecting children and pets from the fast road.

Directions: The Kate Furbish Elementary School is off Jordan Avenue. Turn onto Chester Court Road and drive to the school parking lot. Look for the playground with the sandbox, and you’ll see the gate behind it leading into the woods.
