QUICK TRAIL FACTS
- Preserve Size: N/A
- Trail Mileage: 0.6 miles one way
- Pets: yes
- Difficulty: challenging (but short!)
- Sights: views, fire tower
The 0.6-mile track up this 1,676-foot mountain is rocky and rough, but short, bringing you to a sturdy 1925 fire tower with great views from the observation deck. I didn’t climb the (very tall!) tower, but was pleased to catch some views from the trail a short distance below the summit.
The elevation gained is just 436 feet, very manageable, although to reach the trailhead, you’ll have to navigate a back-road system of logging routes.
Directions: The fire tower is accessible via logging roads that are best driven in a high-clearance car. Turn off Route 151 onto Stagecoach Road, a dirt road, and drive past a small town building and up a steep hill. Travel along Stagecoach Road as it zigs and zags for 3.5 miles. Take a right at 3.5 miles onto a narrower road, following it for 1.9 miles to a grassy area on the left. A half mile after turning onto this lane, wind turbines will come into view. After parking, continue walking along the road — this is the track to the summit. The 12th edition of AMC’s Maine Mountain Guide has detailed driving instructions, and I also found using a downloaded Google map on my phone to be helpful.
