At Long Point, you drive by a beautiful, private, secluded cove, just to get to yet another beautiful, secluded cove.

Once you hop out of the car at the trail kiosk, you’re in for a treat. The trails take you to a short promontory with views, down to a cobble beach, and around a gorgeous bluff.

While the footpaths are not universally accessible—they are rooty and uneven—the road to the beach is passable for sturdy wheelchairs.

Directions: Traveling east on Route 1 in East Machias, take a right on Willow Street across from the fire station. Follow Willow Street .2 mile and take a right onto Route 191. Follow Route 191 south for 2 miles and then take a right on the East Side Road. Travel for 1.8 miles to the 12-car parking lot on the left. If you don’t want to walk into the trail system, and you have a pretty good car, you can keep driving to another parking lot and the trail kiosk, up the hill on the far side of the beach. (A third lot is available for staff and people with handicaps.)
