The drive to this 50-acre preserve, protected by Midcoast Conservancy, provides some of the pleasure of this walk. This little peninsula in Friendship is beautiful, and after you conclude your walk through the quiet, mossy forest, you might want to go for a quick, cold swim at the nearby beach off Martin Point Road. The trail includes two overlooks of shallow Crystal Pond.

Directions: From Rt. 97 in Friendship, head north on Rt. 220. In approximately half a mile take a left onto the Martin Point Road. Proceed 2.5 miles to the trailhead on the right. From Rt. 220 in Waldoboro, at the intersection of Main Street and Rt. 220, drive south approximately 9 miles then make a right turn onto the Martin Point Road. Proceed for 2 1/2 miles to the trailhead on the right. There are two parking spots in the tiny lot.

  1. Hi Joanne, It is a very quick walk to the beach, like 1,200 feet or so. I think you can park closer to the beach, off the road, but there isn’t much room. And I am not sure what the name of the beach is, but it’s very pretty!

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
