Middle River Park, Machias

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 100 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~2 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: fields

I love walking out of a downtown (no matter that it is the sleepy Machias!) right into nature. This 2.5-mile network of pretty trails takes you through cool and pretty woods and a few fields once part of an old farm. There are a a few spots to look out over the river marsh. The field paths were mown and well maintained when we re-visited the preserve in July 2019. This is a  good place to go birding! The Downeast Coastal Conservancy protects this 100-acre preserve, and recently extended the walking trails by approximately a mile on the western side of the preserve.

Directions: From Route 1, across the street from Helen’s Restaurant, turn onto Kilton Lane. Cross over the Sunrise Trail and immediately turn left. Take the first right and park in the lot near the large warehouse building. The trails begin atop the field, after the picnic tables.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
