Mill Brook South Preserve, Westbrook

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 32 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.5-mile loop
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: Mill Brook, mature forest

Not to be confused with the magnificent Mill Brook Preserve, just north of this 32-acre parcel, Mill Brook South Preserve offers a 1.5-mile walk through an old and maple forest. The trail edges a large private field (I hope this doesn’t turn into a subdivision one day!) and brings you down a steep bank to a spot by Mill Brook.

Each spring, alewife fish swim up Mill Brook to reach Highland Lake to spawn. I would love to see this spectacle someday. Presumpscot Land Trust has protected a lot of land around this important waterway to help protect the fishery.

Mill Brook South Preserve starts next to a farm with horses and possibly other animals, so start your walk with your dog on a leash.

Directions: The trailhead is behind the Millbrook Estates parking lot on the north side of East Bridge Street, just north of downtown Westbrook. There are several designated parking spots next to the trailhead for preserve visitors.
