Mill Island Park, Fairfield

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: .5 miles
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: mill ruins, Kennebec River rapids, park

Although a short walk, this is a fascinating one, and quite beautiful. After walking through a pretty meadow you’ll pass through woods to the island point, with big views of the river. You can also check out the ruins from an 1882 pulp and paper mill that once employed 100 people. The paths are wide and flat, and wheelchair friendly for the most part, I think. (They were under a bit of snow, so it was hard to really tell.)

KM Trails is a great source for local trails.

Directions: From the center of Fairfield, take the Route 139 bridge across the Kennebec River, then take the first left onto the island. Drive to the end of the short road, beneath the railroad trestle.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
