Mousam Way South Trail, Sanford

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: 1-mile from Emery St. to School St.
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Mousam River, marsh, wheelchair accessible

At this little walk, you can cross a “marshy backwater” on a solidly built 300-foot boardwalk/bridge. The rest of the trail follows the Mousam River. It is quiet and peaceful. I was here in the winter, and the well-blazed trails were easy to follow. Additionally, you can walk along the bike path (marked in green on the map below), which swings out wide from the narrow walking path.

This is part of a longer trail system in Sanford that allows people to access and explore the Mousam River. You can also hike Mousam Way North, and Mousam Way (Center), and you can keep walking on the trails behind the high school!

Check out all the trails I’ve walked along this stretch of Mousam River in one map. The accessible bike path runs the length of the town trails along the river, and alternates between stone dust, pavement and sidewalk.

Directions: You can pick up the trailhead at Emery Street or from School Street. It may be easier to park at Emery Street. You’ll see a big sign for the trail at the start of the parking lot. If you pull in farther into the lot, you will see another trailhead on your left. If you continue walking down the parking lot, you’ll see a third trailhead for the loop trail.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
