The trails behind North Berwick Primary School are pretty and exuberantly blazed, with large, colorful wooden blocks affixed to trees. The children at this school are so lucky to have such a fabulous property behind them to explore and learn from. There’s a meadow with bird boxes, a shallow river (with a suspension bridge over it), a mature forest, and a sheltered outside classroom.
The paths are wide and easy, although the ones through the meadow were a bit grassy when I visited in early July. One odd thing I noticed was a potentially irascible neighbor who has posted every tree bordering the school property with No Trespassing signs — so there are like 100 or more signs — and then kind of aggressively mowed right up to the property line. No need to point out the obvious — best not to veer off the path onto this land!
The school asks that walkers only visit when school is not in session.
Directions: Parking is behind the North Berwick Primary School on Varney Street, a small street off High Street. The trailhead kiosk is at the northwest corner of the parking area.
