Old Pond, Hancock

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 57 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.5-mile one way
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Youngs Bay, spartina saltmarsh

A half-mile, flat and easy trail brings you to the edge of a wide marsh on this 57-acre Maine Coast Heritage preserve. When I visited, the path had been well used by clammers to access the mudflats.

The path will pass a small shed-like house before reaching a small, high clearing with a picnic table. I walked out on the marsh and to the small island to extend my walk. Additionally, you can explore the other shore, which has a 0.2-mile “rustic” trail. I chose not to to avoid walking the short distance along Route 1.

Directions: (From the land trust) From the US Post Office in Hancock, follow Route 1 west 0.7 mile and then turn left onto Old Route 1 (immediately after crossing Carrying Place Inlet). Drive 0.1 mile to the preserve’s small parking area on the left. The small parking lot has room for about three cars.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
