Pleasant Hill Preserve, Scarborough

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 160 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 2.5 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: fields, woods, wetlands

If you are craving open space, visit the 160-acre Pleasant Hill Preserve and its wonderful expanse of former farmland, including some wetlands that contain the headwaters of the Spurwink River. The preserve borders Rachel Carson refuge land, too.

A quarter-mile-long trail to an old barn is handicap accessible. A 1.5-mile loop (Monty’s Trail) takes you through the fields and into tree groves and woods. At the northern edge of the preserve, you can tack on a 1/2-mile loop (Northern Wildlife Loop) through shady, cool forest. I saw a big flock of bluebirds and a hawk when I visited. The old, rusting barn is kind of fetching too, with its streaky red, grey, and blue metal siding.

Directions: The parking area and trailhead is close to the intersection of Fogg Road and Pleasant Hill Road. If you’re coming from Fogg Road, take a left onto Pleasant Hill, and the trailhead will be shortly on your right.
