Presumpscot River Trail, Riverton Section, Portland

The ~2-mile long Presumpscot River Trail here is parallel to Westbrook’s Presumpscot River Trail on the other side of the river. I saw a beautiful fox traipsing along the river when I came here. I found it a bit difficult to tell where the official trail ends. I kept on walking until I reached a chain link fence, passing what appeared to be a homeless person’s campsite. 

You can also walk around the site of the former Riverton Trolley Park across Route 302.  According to Portland Trails, in the late 19th century people could pay five cents to take the trolley from here to Portland. The park had an outdoor amphitheater, croquet court, boat rides, a trout pond, and a “casino” building by John Calvin Stevens. “While little remains of its previous glory, the park is still a beautiful place for a walk or a snowshoe.” I think it’s better now! 

This trail continues to the golf course and past it for 0.9 miles through the woods and to the river and another trailhead and small parking area off Blackstrap Road.

Directions: Parking is allowed at the Waste Management lot on Route 302 (Forest Avenue). The trailhead is not far. You can also park off Riverside Street at the ball field where you’ll see a trailhead kiosk.
