River Pond Nature Trails, Millinocket area

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure (a lot!)
  • Trail Mileage: 4.6 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: pond, views

If you are looking for a walk that you can do in any season, one that doesn’t require walking up a hill and yet still offers lovely views of Katahdin and surrounding hills, this one is for you! The River Pond Nature Trail, on Katahdin Forest Management timber land, is accessible in all seasons (except in the winter you will need to park off the Golden Road since the 1/4-mile access road to the trailhead is not paved).

The walking area is 90 percent well marked, with regular blazes along the 4.6 miles of trails. (There is one section, however, on the Timber Cruisers trail, where the trail makes a rather sharp bend to the right. The blazes disappear here! We were blundering about a bit before we picked up the trail again.)

More info can be found at Maine Trail Finder.

Directions: The trail is off Golden Road, a bit before you come to River Pond on the left. There is a sign on the side of the road for the trail. If it’s not winter, drive 1/4-mile to the parking lot and trailhead kiosk.
