Roaring Brook Nature Trail, Baxter State Park

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 209,644 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.2-mile loop
  • Pets: no
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: bog, views

The roughly 1.2-mile nature trail to a highland bog with views of Katahdin and South Turner Mountain is lovely at dusk, when I hiked it. In early to mid June, you will also see wildflowers, such as painted trillium and lady slipper orchids.

The trail begins at the ranger’s office at Roaring Brook Campground. In about 100 yards, you’ll see the junction for the trail to the right after crossing the bridge. The trail edges the stream for a short distance before turning into the woods. Don’t miss the spur to the bog, about halfway through the loop, as it is the highlight of the walk!

Directions: Pick up the trailhead at the ranger station of Roaring Brook Campground. The campground is about eight miles from Togue Gate House along Roaring Brook Road.
