Scarborough River Wildlife Sanctuary, Scarborough

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 52 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~1.2 mile in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Scarborough Marsh, meadows, ponds

This pretty town-owned property provides vistas over Scarborough Marsh and all its birdlife.

The trails start as wide, mown paths through grassy meadows before they enter the woods and become a bit rougher, but still easy. On the main perimeter path, if you’re headed clockwise, you’ll pass a pretty pond before you reach the first, and better, of the two marsh overlooks. Continue on your way to the second overlook, where you’ll see a herd path that winds down to the shore. If you dart into the interior on a scruffy little path, you’ll also come across a small pond blanketed with green algae.

Directions: From Route 1 in Scarborough, turn onto Pine Point Road. Continue for 1.8 miles and look for the sanctuary sign on the left. Additionally, there are a few parking spaces at the second trailhead off Mallard Lane (which seems to be the end of Eagles Nest Drive, at least on Google maps).
