Shore Trail in orange; Maine Hut Trail and Service Road in blue.
For those looking for a flattish walk with lakeside views and a refreshing lakeside breeze, this is a good option! The total mileage of the loop is about 4.5 miles. I recommend starting out on the Shore Trail, which follows Flagstaff Lake north around a small point near Flagstaff Hut, and then returning via the Maine Hut Trail (a wide track) or the service road. The service road is slightly shorter.
Though there were several places to access the water along the Shore Trail, the lake level was very high when I visited, meaning no sandy beaches as advertised, sadly! Otherwise I think this would be a near perfect walk-and-swim combo.
Directions: From North New Portland, take Long Falls Dam Road (which is paved) 21 miles north. The trailhead and large parking area will be on your left, marked with a Maine Huts and Trails sign.
