Skowhegan Bog Trail, Skowhegan

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: ~2 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: bog, fields

Behind the Skowhegan Area High School, you can pick up a public trail system that brings you along mowed paths and through a patch of woods to a bog along Currier Brook. When I visited in 2024, there was, at the edge of the wetland, a derelict observation deck/picnic shelter, broken and rotting, that was kind of interesting and picturesque.

The mowed trails through the meadows were fabulous, and probably dependent on a generous volunteer mowing them? I wandered around for quite a while on them.

The trail system was not marked, other than a kiosk with some information for disc golf. After parking at the corner of the high school, you can find the trails by walking around the end of the fence and down the edge of the playing fields for about 100 feet. You’ll see a trail off to your right and the kiosk. You can then walk the mowed trails throughout the old frisbee course, or walk along the edge of the playing field to access the trail to the bog. It’s about 0.6 miles from the parking area by the high school to the bog, if you take the most direct route.

Once you are headed toward the bog, you’ll see a spur, one-way trail to your right that will bring you to the edge of the wetland. This side trail was a touch grassier and more overgrown than the other trails.

Directions: (Town directions) From the intersection of Main Street and Water Street, take Route 2/201A west toward Norridgewock. Drive about 0.9 miles and turn left into the main entrance to the Skowhegan school compound. Park behind the high school or next to Bloomfield Elementary School.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
