The Downeast Salmon Federation describes this trail as “a hide-away where the artists who created Bambi gained inspiration. This preserve has 608 acres of land protected along 5.5 miles of river with trails, a wonderful swimming hole, a historic camp, and an abandoned homestead to explore.”
But during my visit, I found the trail system hard to navigate. The small loop to the right of the parking area was overgrown (in 2019). There is one place to get a bit closer to the river, but I saw no place to swim. The trail, or what was left of it, was marked with blue plastic tags. On the other side of the road, the trail, too, was overgrown. We got as far as where it descends into a marsh before turning back.
But I’ll try to return one day to try again!
Directions: Approximately 3 miles from Blacks Woods Road is a marked parking area where there are 2 trail heads to access the preserve on other side of the road.
