Sukeforth Family Trail System at Thomas College, Waterville

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: 3.5 miles in trail system
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: Kennebec River, Messalonskee Stream

Sometime in 2018, Thomas College expanded and improved its previously smaller trail system. The Sukeforth Family System of Trails is a wonderful place to walk, and includes a bench perched on a bank high over the Kennebec River and a short section of accessible trail (a wide trail with a hardened surface around the baseball and soccer Alumni Fields.) All together, the trails segments add up to about 3.5 miles, according to my GPS.

Other dirt pathways follow the river along the very tall banks, although one brings you right down to the water. Beyond these, you can wander through the woods, small fields, and a little pond. The trails aren’t blazed, but are mostly easy to follow, with an occasional Thomas College trail sign marking the way. Two kiosks with You Are Here tags are located behind the Smith Field (down a short gravel road) and at the corner of the Alumni Fields (baseball and soccer fields). These are also probably the best places to park, or nearby.

Directions: Thomas College is off Route 104 (West River Road). There are two kiosks with You Are Here tags are located behind the Smith Field (down a short gravel road) and at the corner of the Alumni Fields (baseball and soccer fields). I had no problem parking at the campus on a weekend.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
