In the  late 19th century and first part of the 20th century, this land — between Lewis and Haley roads — was the site of the Kittery Alms House, later called the Poor Farm. Land was set aside for the indigent, who were given a cow and a plot for a vegetable garden. Today if you visit the preserve, you will walk by foundations, stonewalls, and unmarked graves. Evidently, many of the paupers (perhaps up to 75 people) were buried on the property. Like many other preserves in Kittery, there are some gorgeous old red oaks, and the trails are decently marked.

Directions: You can park at either end of the park, off of Lewis Road or Haley Road.
