Walsh Preserve, Freeport

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 13 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 0.5 miles in trail system
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights:

This is a great spot to walk a short distance and see views of Cousins River and the vast expanse of marshy area here. It’s protected by the Freeport Land Trust. You have a choice of two trails—one short (~0.2 miles), one slightly longer—that bring you to the edges of the marsh.

Though you can hear the ceaseless roar of the nearby highway, that did not reduce our enjoyment of the bird watching here! We saw Canada geese (with goslings!), a snowy egret, blue heron, and a killdeer (I think?). Though Walsh Preserve is somewhat small — I believe around 13 acres — it is part of a larger conservation project around Cousins river and Marsh.

Directions: The address is 67 Old County Road. The preserve is across the street from Beck’s Lane, near the Yarmouth town line. The small parking lot can probably hold six to eight cars.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
