Walter Marsh Recreation Area Woods Trails, Wells

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 70 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~1.8 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Merriland River

At this plentiful town park (it has a playground, ball fields, an ice skating rink, snack stand, etc.), the trails are delightful! And I’d say half, if not more, are wide, flat, universally accessible paths—somewhat like old carriage roads.

The paths wind through the old forests behind the playing fields, bringing you to the edge of the river-fed Hobbs Pond, which is quiet and undeveloped. The forest floor is clear and open near the pond as if it sees a lot of action, but the weekend day we visited, we had the place to ourselves. We also followed an unmarked path all the way along the pond to Hobbs Farm road, where there was a pullout for cars and easy access to the pond.

Some of the narrow footpaths can be a bit wet.

Directions: The address is 412 Branch Road in Wells, across the street from the intersection of Branch Road and Burnt Mill Road. If you park near the big snack shack, you’ll see the trails leading in the opposite direction into the woods and along a little pond and small field.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
