Westbrook City Forest (Congin School trails), Westbrook

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 117 acres
  • Trail Mileage: ~3.1 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: woods, mountain bikers

This is really a mountain biker’s park. The single-track weaves all around, making for some good biking but kind of frustrating walking! But there are lovely spots here, particularly in the northern sections of the trail. My map, by the way, is not complete. It was too confusing following all the little single-track routes made by bicyclists. The trails are not blazed.

According to the city map below, Westbrook plans to keep developing trails here. Right now the trail ends at a power line.

For a good walk, I recommend starting at the Community Center trailhead. You walk up the power lines for 100 feet or so, and then turn left into the forest. Then you should follow  the utility road/snowmobile path (marked as white in the city map) through the woods. Cross the first set of power lines to get to the north section of the forest. You’ll soon see a little single track path to your left, called the Cascade Trail on the city map. When I was here in the winter of 2017, the Cascade Trail was well tagged with green fluorescent flags. You’ll find a sweet stream and small waterfall. Then you can walk back again via the wide track.

Directions: The major trailhead is behind the Westbrook Community Center on Bridge Street, close to the Congin School. You’ll find the trailhead by driving to the northeast corner of the center, and parking behind it, close to the power lines. You should see a kiosk.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
