Williams Mountain, near West Forks and Jackman

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: 1.7 miles to summit, elevation gain 740 ft.
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: moderate, with one steep section
  • Sights: fire warden's hut, tower, views from ledges below the 2,410-ft summit

While the views are nice on this relatively easy mountain (2,410 ft.), what might be a comparable draw is the old fire warden’s cabin close to the summit. The hut appears to be used by hikers (maybe hunters?), and is cosy (a bit grungy, though) and outfitted with some basic kitchen and first aid staples, blankets, pots, pans, even a pair of rubber boots.

To find the trail, you should park at a cleared area off Williams Mountain Road, which I’ve marked on my map. There you’ll see trail sign and, in 2019, another sign for temporary parking. I gather there is an effort underway to make a new trailhead a few hundred yards farther down the road. For now, walk up the track straight ahead for .4 miles, and just before you crest the hill (which opens to a wide, grassy clearing), you’ll see the blazed trail to the right. (Another trail heads down to the road on the left.) The trail to the summit is easy to follow and well marked. At points along it, you’ll get nice views of the summit and views to the south and east.

The 1.3-mile footpath to the 2,410-foot summit is mostly gradual until the last quarter mile when it climbs steeply up. Close to the top, the trail makes a little loop to different ledges with views. After enjoying these vistas, continue straight up the mountain to check out the fire warden’s cabin and, 25 or so feet farther on, the fire warden tower (which we were too scared to climb all the way but I’m sure offers fine views from several rungs up).

Directions: From the junction of Route 201 and Route 15 in Jackman, drive 13.5 miles to Williams Mountain Road. Turn right onto this dirt road and go 3.6 miles where you’ll see a sign for the trail and a small clearing to park.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
