  • Berry Woods Preserve — This 377-acre preserve, with its 2.66-mile trail system, connects with another 1,300 acres of conserved lands — including Reid State Park (no connecting trail, though, I don’t think?) and Maine Audubon’s Josephine Newman Sanctuary. Dogs aren’t allowed.
  • Josephine Newman Audubon Sanctuary  This 119-acre preserve offers several miles of trails, a salt marsh, meadows, water views, forest, and a long walk over to Berry Woods. No dogs allowed.
  • Reid State Park — Gorgeous state park, with long sandy beaches and miles of winding trails. Pets allowed but not on the beach.
  • Higgins Mountain  This 40-acre preserve offers a short jaunt, about 1/2 mile, up a teeny mountain! No dogs.
  • Flying Point — A 3-mile walk across a marsh and around an island. Be careful about noting the tides as the access path will be underwater during high tide. Dogs are not allowed.
  • Schoener Robinhood Cove Preserve — Dogs are allowed on this 154-acre lot owned by the University of Maine and used for science and educational purposes. Evidently, you can sled on the field to the right.
