Old Town

  • Hirundo Wildlife Refuge — This amazing 2,460-acre preserve has a variety of trails to explore, including a charming accessible trail around a little pond it calls Lac D’or. Additionally, you can learn about a wide array of topics — from Native history to fox dens — on this University of Maine land via the many interesting panels set up along its trail system.
  • Otter Brook Conservation Area — This preserve doesn’t appear to get much upkeep or many visitors! But there is a wide, grassy path to a wetland area and an old, blazed loop through forest that was hard to follow with blowdowns, etc., when I visited.
  • Rick Swan Trails at Perch Pond — A vast network of biking trails, open to walkers — and snow shoers/skiers in the winter. The highlight is the Shore Trail, along the undeveloped Perch Pond.
