Cattail Trail

Fairfield, Kennebec County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: ~0.5 mile one way
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: marsh

The short one-way Cattail Trail links playing fields with Lawrence High School. It’s wide and packed gravel — almost wheelchair accessible save for some roots. Find the trail at the edge of the playing fields, at both ends. On my visit in 2024, the signs were tucked away a bit, so were a bit hard to see. The cattails are abundant in a marsh you walk by closer to the Industrial Road end. After the marsh, you walk through a lovely fern-covered conifer forest.

Directions: (From KM Trails) From Interstate-95 North, take exit #132, turn right onto Western Ave/Route 139; turn right onto Industrial Road. Park at the Richard McGee Athletic Complex. From downtown Fairfield, follow Western Avenue/Route 139 about 1 mile; Industrial Drive is on the left just before Interstate-95.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
