To get to the Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Long Point, you’ll drive by one beautiful, private, secluded cove just to get to yet another beautiful, secluded cove. Once you hop out of the car at the trail kiosk, you’re in for a beautiful experience. The trails bring you to a short promontory with views (Holmes Point), down to a cobble beach on Cottage Cove, and around a gorgeous bluff (Long Point).

While the footpaths are rooty, rocky and go over uneven terrain, the pretty dirt road (East Side Road) that you follow to get to the footpaths, and which passes Machias Bay, offers easier walking.

Directions: Traveling east on Route 1 in East Machias, take a right on Willow Street across from the fire station. Follow Willow Street .2 mile and take a right onto Route 191. Follow Route 191 south for 2 miles and then take a right on the East Side Road. Travel for 1.8 miles to the 12-car parking lot on the left. If you don’t want to walk into the trail system, and you have a pretty good car, you can keep driving to another parking lot and the trail kiosk, up the hill on the far side of the beach. (A third lot is available for staff and people with handicaps.)
