Mariners Memorial Park

Deer Isle, Hancock County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: 1.2 miles in network
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: meadow, Long Cove

A gravel road follows the slope of a meadow down to the shore if you just want to quickly take in the views at this beautiful park dedicated to all the men of the island lost at sea. Or you can walk the easy 0.5-mile perimeter trail, which is mown and well tended.

For those who want to extend their walk and don’t mind slightly more rugged terrain, there is a 1-mile footpath in the woods adjacent to the field. It’s made up of two loops: the Shore Trail brings you to a bank along the ocean, with views through trees, while the Upper Ridge Trail winds around an interesting field of what I believe are erratic boulders. The path is a bit more challenging around these mossy humps.

We appreciated the dog bowl for water at the parking lot! This is a lovely spot to walk and have a picnic.

Directions: Turn left off Route 15 at the gas station onto Sunshine Road. Take your immediate right onto Morey Farm Lane and take a left at the gate with a sign for the park. If the gate is closed (as it was when I was there in the winter), there is space really just for one car.

Let me know if you have any trail updates or corrections!
