You can do a 1.2-mile, or shorter, hike at this 100-acre preserve donated to Three Rivers Land Trust by James Chadbourne a couple of years ago. The preserve is named in honor of Marjorie Dunnells Chadbourne, a naturalist who cherished all the life around her Shapleigh home.
The trail is mostly flat and easy, with a tiny hill or two. It starts in a small meadow before crossing a little bridge that spans a stream that flows across the property into nearby Square Pond.
Without knowing the specific history of the land, the forest looks as if it is rebuilding from a partial cut quite a while ago, leaving a few scattered large trees. The woods have a lofty, lovely upper canopy with a jungly understory.
Directions: From Town Farm Road, turn onto Apple Road. The preserve’s parking area will be on the right in about 0.25 miles
