I love walking out of a downtown right into nature. This 2.5-mile network of trails brings you away from the traffic and buildings of Machias and puts you in shaded, pretty woods and a few fields once part of an old farm. There are a a few places you can look out over the river marsh. The field paths were mown and well maintained when we visited the preserve. This is a good place to go birding! The Downeast Coastal Conservancy protects this 100-acre preserve.
Directions: From Route 1, across the street from Helen’s Restaurant, turn onto Kilton Lane. Cross over the Sunrise Trail and immediately turn left. Take the first right and park in the lot near the large warehouse building. The trails begin atop the field, after the picnic tables.
