Mill Brook South Preserve

Westbrook, Cumberland County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: 32 acres
  • Trail Mileage: 1.5-mile loop
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Sights: Mill Brook, mature forest

Not to be confused with the magnificent Mill Brook Preserve, which is just north of this 32-acre parcel, Mill Brook South Preserve offers a 1.5-mile walk through an oak and maple forest. The trail edges a large private field and brings you down a steep bank to a spot by the brook.

Each spring, alewife fish swim up Mill Brook to reach Highland Lake to spawn. They’re returning after a long absence, following the removal of a dam and the clean-up of the waterway. Presumpscot Land Trust has protected a lot of acreage around this important stream to help protect the fishery.

Mill Brook South Preserve starts next to a farm with horses and possibly other animals, so you should keep your pup on a leash here.

Directions: The trailhead is behind the Millbrook Estates parking lot on the north side of East Bridge Street, just north of downtown Westbrook. There are several designated parking spots next to the trailhead for preserve visitors.
