Moxie Falls Trail

Moxie Gore, Somerset County

QUICK TRAIL FACTS

  • Preserve Size: Not sure
  • Trail Mileage: ~1 mile to the falls
  • Pets: yes
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Sights: Moxie Falls

Every time we passed the large parking lot for this walk, it was packed with visitors. And it is popular for a reason! The falls are pretty, the 1-mile trail to the falls is easy, and once you get to the viewing area, which is braced high above the river below, there are boardwalks, steps and platforms to make the experience safe and also fun.

There’s a short side trail to the right as you’re heading toward the falls that brings you to a small waterfall and a large pool above Moxie Falls.

In addition, if you want to extend your walk, there is an informal, unmarked trail that continues west (in the direction of town and Route 201) just past the farthest viewing station. After walking into the woods and away from the falls, you pick your way along a steep bank high over the river gully below. While you don’t have clear views of the river through the trees, it’s dramatic nonetheless. In about 0.3 miles, the path heads sharply down to the right (it’s unmarked, so watch closely) down to an ATV track. This intersection is marked with a little tag. Go left here, and follow this back to the entrance trail for a 2.3-mile hike all together.

The path to the waterfall is wide, often smooth, and mostly level, making the walking very easy. The secondary trails — which are likely not regularly maintained, if at all — are more uneven and rougher.

Directions: From Route 201 in The Forks, turn onto Lake Moxie Road. Drive 1.8 miles, and the trailhead and large parking area will be on your left.
