Androscoggin River Path in blue; Merrymeeting Park trails in orange.
This is a popular 2.7-mile paved path squeezed between the river and Route 1. There are some pleasant spots, and several well placed benches on the river closer to the western trailhead (on Water Street). The selling points of this path are 1) it’s paved for accessibility, 2) it is plowed and sanded in the winter, and 3) there is a dog park with very cute dogs. (The dog park is about 0.2 miles from the Water Street trailhead.) But the downside? The traffic zooming by makes for a noisy walk in sections!
If you’re able to walk off the paved trail, there’s an especially nice mown section of the park about 0.7 miles from the Water Street trailhead, with a secret bench at the far end. It’s tucked away behind bushes, with a nice view of the river.
About halfway down the trail, you can also divert from the paved path to explore beautiful Merrymeeting Park.
Directions: There are two places to park. For the west-end trailhead, park at the end of Water Street. For the eastern trailhead, turn off Old Bath Road onto the dead-end Grover Lane. Park at the end of the lane.
